The first scholarship was given in 1983, when Mrs. Ruth M. Jones a retired school teacher gave a scholarship in her mother’s memory and in her honor. Having spent 42 years in education, she wanted to give back to the community to acknowledge the support she received from her mother who worked very hard to be assured her daughter received an education to benefit others. Mrs. Jones passed in 1993 and eighteen months later and the concept of the foundation was birthed and has evolved to continuous scholarships provided to the community since 1983. Through the continuous support of the community the Fonnie B. Murrill and Ruth M. Jones Scholarship Foundation has become an annual supporter of education in the community through scholarships and other activities.
The Goals of the Scholarship Foundation are as follows:
To endow the scholarship fund through wholesome activities;
To broaden the scholarship base of the youth in our community with the assistance of our community resources; and
To provide workshops, clinics and programs to enhance the community.
The Foundation is organized with five (5) members of the Board of Directors. Representation from the board is from St. Augustus A.M.E. Zion Church, Greater Kinston Community, Woodington School Community and the Family of Mrs. Ruth M. Jones.
Programs that have been offered by the Foundation to achieve its goals are Fonnie B. Murrill and Ruth M. Jones Scholarship Dinners, Yard Sale, Solicitation of Donations, Music Explosion Benefit Concerts and the Signature Event - Bicycle Fitness Ride Scholarship.
THE FONNIE B. MURRILL AND RUTH M. JONES SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION IS RECOGNIZED BY THE INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE UNDER SECTION 501 (c) 3.
Donations given to the Foundation are Tax-Deductible.
As a Foundation with a mission, we solicit your support by:
Supporting the Activities of the Foundation with your participation;
Volunteering to assist with upcoming events;
Giving a Tax-deductible donation to the Foundation; and
Endowing a scholarship in honor/memory of a loved one to benefit our community.
